Kiwi Soldier Monte Cassino page

Around the Town
Cassino is a moderate sized town, obviously only 60 years old being totally rebuilt after the
total destruction of World War II. There are some signs of some original buildings on
the lower parts of MonteCassino alongside the road that winds its way up to the Abbey.
Some new houses are being built in this same area and I have to say my first thought was
"sacrilage" - like they were building on hallowed ground, but of course the original town
buildings obviously were there so why not? The whole area is sacred ground.
