Around the Town
Cassino is a moderate sized town, obviously only 60 years old being totally rebuilt after the total destruction of World War II. There are some signs of some original buildings on the lower parts of MonteCassino alongside the road that winds its way up to the Abbey. Some new houses are being built in this same area and I have to say my first thought was "sacrilage" - like they were building on hallowed ground, but of course the original town buildings obviously were there so why not? The whole area is sacred ground.

Cassino from the Abbey access road - the town nestles into the area at the base of the mountains (Trocchio to the right). The road at the base of MonteCassino. Straight ahead Rocca Janula and the Peace Monument on the hill.
The Abbey above the town. Standing near the corner of Route 6 and the road at the base of the MonteCassino. Rocca Janula above the town. Beside the church.
Ruins of houses on the base of MonteCassino alongside the Abbey access road near Rocca Janula. Monte Trocchio above the town looking SE from the lower part of the Abbey access road.
Sacrilige! New houses beside the access road on the foothills of MonteCassino. Castle Hill and the Peace Monument. Rocca Janula under reconstruction.
The Peace Monument overlooking the town. The Rapido River is where the trees area is in the middle of the photo. The access path to Rocca Janula (closed during reconstruction). Cassino from the access road. Looking down over Castle Hill and the outskirts of Cassino from the access road. Cassinum - Roman outdoor theatre near the base of Monte Cassino, with the Abbey ever-dominating. Cassino Railway station - once the dearly won prize of the Maori Battalion. Cassino Railway station.
The peaceful countryside at the base of MonteCassino to the North of the town. Hill 593 is just visible at the right. The peaceful countryside at the base of MonteCassino to the North of the town. The Abbey is visible with Hill 593 to it's left and Hangmans Hill on the right from this angle.
